Yummy Yorkshire supports celebratory Tour de France art project with provision of 200 picnics

We are providing over 200 picnics to help mark the final phase of a Barnsley art project which celebrates the arrival of the Tour de France in Yorkshire.

‘The Art Station’ project was commissioned by Barnsley Museums and showcases the work of four professional artists inspired by the famous bicycle race.

The work will be installed on the Trans Pennine Trail ahead of the race on the 5 and 6 July and will remain as a permanent feature on the trail between Penistone and Dunford Bridge.

Over 550 local children and adults from schools and community groups as well as members of the general public joined the four artists to help create the sculptures, weaving wire and willow, chipping away at stone or creating their own mosaic.

On Tuesday 1 July the school children involved in the project will get the chance to visit some of the sculptures in their final destination by taking part in the last leg of the art project, ‘The Art Walk’.

They will visit Dunford Bridge and Bullhouse before walking three kilometres along the Trans Pennine Trail to Penistone where they will enjoy the picnics we have provided as well as an ice cream from our Yummy Yorkshire trailer.

Co-founder of Yummy Yorkshire Louise Holmes said: “We’re delighted to take part in The Art Walk and provide the children with a picnic and an ice cream as a thank you for their involvement in the art project. As well as meeting all the school children we are looking forward to seeing some of the artwork in its final home.”

The Schools involved in The Art Station project are; Kexborough Primary School, Summer Lane Primary School, Burton Road Primary School, Kings Oak Primary Learning Centre, Dodworth St. Johns Primary School, Queens Road Academy, Meadsteads Primary Academy.

The Art Station is part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014; the first ever 100-day festival to precede the Grand Départ in its 111 year history. Nearly 50 events have been selected to be officially part of Yorkshire Festival 2014 which will also include hundreds of fringe events.
